Miombo honey: You can already taste real African honey!
In the heart of Africa, near the sources of the mighty Zambezi River, in the tropical forest , there is one of the largest concentrations of wild bee colonies in the world. The people of this region collect honey produced by these bees following, even today, the same traditional techniques employing their ancestors over 500 years ago. They extract the bark of a tree of between 1 and 2 meters long and create a hollow cylinder with it. This cylinder is the hive itself, and it is afterwards hung from a high branch. Bees in the area will colonize the hive and, when the time of harvest, the beekeeper climbs the tree and removes the honey.
Miombo is the Swahili word that defines the ecosystem in which you get this honey. Miombo forests are found in tropical Africa and are characterized by its unique vegetation, which is hard to find outside this environment. It is also one of the preferred habitats for the African elephant. To ensure its preservation it is necessary to develop activities to reconcile the needs of the communities that inhabit it and its fragile environmental balance. In this sense, all non-timber activities, such as beekeeping, play a very important role.
Bee Honey is proud to present the first Miombo honey marketed in Spain. In fact, at the moment, it can only be found in very few European countries. In this case, it comes from Zambia, from a region where there is a community of more than 6,000 beekeepers for whom the bees provide a vital source of income for their livelihoods in perfect balance with its natural environment.
The vegetation of the area along with the traditional extraction techniques that are used give this honey a unique personality that you may percieve just tasting it. It is a forest honey with strong tasting that contains multiple flavors from the wide and rich flora present in the ecosystem from which it comes. We love by how different it is on all the honeys we've tested! We are looking forward to know about your own favorite combinations for this honey!
Miombo honey is presented in XXVII Gourmets Fair held in Madrid from 8 to 11 April 2013.
